Race to the Finnish line...

Intel and Nokia and the University of Oulu today officially opened the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Centre, their first joint research centre. The University of Oulu in Finland is an international scientific community known for high-quality research and education that provides experts for demanding tasks on both national and international level. The lab will focus on creating new and compelling Internet user experiences that leverage the rapidly increasing processing and graphics power of mobile devices. The first such research project looks to use graphical 3D technology to create "immersive mobile interfaces".

Salt Lake City spin off's.... and start-up's...

Speedy says the University of Utah is ranked #1 in university start-ups. They didn’t achieve its status by chance. And one of their key strategies focuses on developing and maintaining a top-notch executive-in-residence program, housed in the Pierre Lassonde Entrepreneur Center.

It's actually about a lawsuit... not stem cells...

Speedy says it's actually about a lawsuit by James L. Sherley and Theresa Deisher, researchers who study adult stem cells. The pair argued that the new administration's guidelines would "result in increased competition for limited federal funding," hindering their plans to seek money for other research. So they are suing because they may not get federal grant money. So does that mean we can all sue in order to get money that we think we should be getting ?

The United States decided this week to support the creation of a United Nations commission of inquiry into the Burmese military regime's crimes against humanity and war crimes. That human rights violations have occurred is clear, and many have noted that the Burmese junta's restrictions on its upcoming elections make it all but certain the generals will retain power. The real dilemma is whether it is better to express moral outrage at these offenses or to hold off, presuming the possibility of eventual change under a new government.
